Security operatives comprising the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken over strategic positions at the business area of Banex, Wuse 2, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital in anticipation of a further protest by Shi’ite members.
It was gathered that the aggrieved Islamic sect may have been planning to continue their protest, but this time, against the arrest and detention of some of its members.
The cordoning of the area, it was learnt, hampered free pedestrian and vehicular movement. Meanwhile, DCP Frank Mba, spokesperson of the police, assured residents of Abuja that the men of the law enforcement agency was top of the situation. “I want to reassure citizens, particularly residents of the FCT, that adequate security measures have been emplaced to protect all Nigerians in line with the presidential directives to the IGP.
“We have security cordon around the city,” Mba said. Earlier President Buhari had summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Adamu Mohammed, to Aso Rock over the latest bloody protest by the members of the IMN. At the closed-door meeting, IGP Adamu briefed the president on the latest protest by the Shiite group in Abuja.
