Rtd. Colonel Bah Ndaw, has been sworn in as the head of a transitional government in Mali following a recent coup by the Malian military.
Ndaw was sworn in during a ceremony that took place in the capital Bamako.
The ceremony was graced by government officials (who dressed in military attires), Senior Judges and foreign diplomats.
A committee was appointed by the military junta which ousted the former President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on August 18 and the committee chose Ndaw, a 70-year-old retired colonel, as interim president.
Ndaw and Colonel Assimi Goita, who led the military junta, will transitionally lead for a maximum of 18 months before national elections are organised.
During the swewring in ceremony, Supreme Court Chief Prosecutor Boya Dembele disclosed that the challenges facing both men were “enormous”.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sanctioned Mali after the coup but the sanction might be reduced now that the interim government has been sworn in.
