Amid allegations of impropriety involving the awarding of government contracts to his purported romantic partner, Prime Minister Alberto Otárola of Peru has reportedly tendered his resignation. Audio recordings surfaced, purportedly capturing conversations where Mr. Otárola discussed leveraging his position to secure significant contracts for a woman.
Denying any wrongdoing, Mr. Otárola, aged 57, faced mounting scrutiny following the release of the recordings. An investigation has been initiated into the matter, as reported by the BBC.
The individual in question, Yaziré Pinedo, aged 25, allegedly engaged in discussions with Mr. Otárola, as depicted in the audio files initially aired on the Panorama program over the weekend. It was revealed that Ms. Pinedo purportedly received two government contracts in 2023, totaling 53,000 sol ($14,000; £11,000), for work within the Ministry of Defence.
Mr. Otárola previously held the position of Peru’s Defence Minister until the conclusion of 2022, when President Dina Boluarte assumed office. The unfolding scandal has prompted a shake-up in Peru’s political landscape, with investigations underway to ascertain the veracity of the allegations and potential ramifications for those involved.
