Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) is currently investigating the death of a patient in St. Boniface Hospital ER.
The WRHA confirmed that the patient died recently. The patient had been triaged and had gone through a number of diagnostic tests. The patient had been in the emergency department for around five hours. In line with standard practice, this incident will be reviewed to find out if it meets the criteria of a critical incident.
In a statement, Kerstin Jordan, Regional Lead for Patient Safety for the Winnipeg Health Region, said: “Our sincerest condolences go out to the patient’s family and our thoughts are with them.

“As a nurse myself who at times works in our EDs, I know all healthcare professionals work so tirelessly to ensure the best outcomes possible for those they care for. Events like this – and right now for the amazing team at St. Boniface ED – are heartbreaking.”
The incident occurred almost two weeks after the WHRA started investigating the death of a patient at Grace Hospital in November after waiting 33 hours.
A recent report from Winnipeg revealed that there were 10 deaths deemed critical incidents between October 1 and December 31, 2022.
