As Nigeria prepares for the forthcoming rainy season, efforts are being made to relocate over 10,000 individuals that were displaced by floods in Kogi State in 2022.
When he visited the affected area in the state recently, Alh. Abubakar Yelwa, the Managing Director of the Hydro-Electricity Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), talked about the importance of relocation due to the activities of River Benue.
According to Yelwa, the extremity of the floods in 2022 requires the government to offer alternative housing for those affected. He said if the traditional ruler and officials from Bassa Local Government show them the plot of land, construction of new buildings that will house the displaced villagers will begin within two weeks.

As NiMet forecasts even more severe rainfall in 2023 than in 2022, it is imperative that the relocation is carried out without delay. Yelwa confirmed that construction will start once the authorities identify the new location.
He also stated that they are ready to start working on controlling the erosive activities of the river banks.
