Oscar Pistorius, the former Paralympic champion known as the ‘blade runner,’ has been released on parole nearly 11 years after the tragic murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, a case that garnered international attention.
Pistorius was granted parole in November and has now left a South African jail, as confirmed by the country’s correctional services department.
The 37-year-old athlete shot Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013 at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. Pistorius claimed he mistook her for an intruder and fired his gun through a bathroom door. However, prosecutors argued that the killing was premeditated, asserting that Pistorius shot Steenkamp after a domestic dispute, leading her to seek refuge in the bathroom.
The parole granted to Pistorius will extend until December 2029, during which time he will be subject to restrictions and supervised by a correctional services official. Additionally, Pistorius is required to attend therapy for anger issues and “gender-based violence issues” and will be engaged in community service. He is expected to stay in his uncle’s mansion in Pretoria.
June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mother, expressed her sentiments through a statement shared by the family lawyer. She emphasized that no amount of time served could bring Reeva back, and for those left behind, they feel like they are serving a life sentence. June Steenkamp’s only desire is to live in peace after Pistorius’ release on parole.
