Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has repeated its call for restructuring of Nigeria and the creation of more states in the South East.
The group’s President-General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu made the call during the Ohanaeze Ndigbo retreat recently in Enugu while lamenting that the South East has lost trillions due to the disparity in state and local government creation, which was carried out by military fiat.
Iwuanyanwu stated that Ohanaeze was not happy with the 1999 Constitution as amended.
According to him, if Nigeria is restructured, power would be devolved from federal to state with a sensible autonomy to develop at their own pace without any obstruction from the Federal Government.
He said: “It will enable us to build our own seaports, railways, and other infrastructure to develop the zone.”
On the imbalance in state creation, Iwuanyanwu threatened to take legal action against the Federal Government if it does not give the region an additional state equivalent to other zones in the country.
He said: “We are assembling Igbo lawyers to pursue it.
“Ohanaeze is in full support of the implementation of the Oronsaye report, but will request all Igbo anywhere to ensure that PRODA is not merged with any other institutions.”
