Nigeria’s political landscape is buzzing with controversy following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint his son-in-law, Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, as the new head of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).
Ojo, who is married to Tinubu’s eldest daughter, Folashade, steps into the position amidst raised eyebrows, marking the first time Tinubu has chosen a relative for a federal government role.
The presidency defended the appointment, pointing to Ojo’s extensive background in the housing and hospitality sectors, as well as his previous tenure as a member of the House of Representatives. However, the move has sparked intense debate on social media, with critics arguing that there were potentially more qualified candidates overlooked in favor of familial ties.
“Blatant nepotism undermines leadership integrity. Unfortunately, Nigerian leadership often fails to recognize it as a breach of ethics,” lamented one social media user, capturing the sentiment of many online commentators.
Despite the backlash, some have rallied to Ojo’s defense, asserting that his familial connection to the president shouldn’t disqualify him from public service. Tinubu’s decision to overhaul the management of the housing ministry, of which FHA is a part, was cited as a reason behind the appointment.
As the FHA plays a crucial role in facilitating the provision of affordable housing nationwide, Ojo’s leadership will be closely scrutinized in the coming months.
