Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has emerged the new Director General of World Trade Organization. She is the first woman and first African Director-General of the WTO.
In an election that was keenly contested, Okonjo-Iweala defeated her rival, South Korean Yoo Myung hee, by a wide margin. She recorded 104 votes from 164 member countries to beat Myung Hee at the race’s final stage.
Okonjo-Iweala got support from Africa and other continents prior to the election day.
Her victory came days after European Union countries backed Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy against Ms. Myung hee, who was backed by the United States.
