(NC) It’s that time of year: students are leaving for post-secondary school.
Moving away from home to college or university is an exciting time. It can be also stressful for students and parents.
“You will probably feel anxiety and excitement after your child moves away for school,” Dr. Katy Kamkar, a psychologist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, says.
“The best thing you can do to help prevent unnecessary stress is to give students useful information. Help with building their support network. Also, find ways to help them take care of themselves so they can embrace new experiences with confidence.”
Here’s what you can do to help your student get ready to start the next exciting chapter of their life:
Organize paperwork. Help your student organize all their living arrangements and financial records. Encourage them to bring copies just in case. Copies of their passport and birth certificate are helpful in case the school or a new health-care provider needs them.
Learn about the services surrounding the campus. If your student is moving far from home, they will likely need new health-care professionals. For example, a doctor, dentist or therapist. To help them in their search, they can try a website like Lumino Health. In less than a minute, it finds dentists nearby with ratings and cost information.
Help them set a student budget. And try to stick with it! Post-secondary school involves socializing, buying books and facing the inevitable hidden costs of being a student. It’s a good idea for them to see how much money they have to spend.
