The Toronto Raptors, already grappling with a challenging season, now face another setback as backup center Jontay Porter is under investigation by the NBA regarding alleged gambling irregularities.
Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic confirmed that Porter is the subject of an ongoing NBA investigation into prop betting activities involving him. Rajakovic expressed surprise at the allegations and emphasized the team’s commitment to addressing the situation appropriately.
ESPN first reported the investigation, revealing that it focused on Porter’s performances during games on Jan. 26 and March 20. In both instances, Porter left the games early due to injury or illness, failing to meet the prop-wager lines for points, rebounds, and three-pointers.
Veteran forward Garrett Temple, also a vice-president for the NBA players’ association, expressed support for Porter amid the investigation, emphasizing the importance of awaiting conclusive evidence.
Porter, who has been inactive for personal reasons since Saturday, was recently given a more significant role in the Raptors’ rotation due to an injury to starting center Jakob Poeltl.
The NBA strictly prohibits gambling by anyone associated with the league, including players and staff. Ontario’s legalization of online sports betting does not exempt NBA affiliates from these regulations.
The NBA and NBAPA have implemented comprehensive anti-gambling education programs to educate players on the risks and consequences of engaging in gambling activities.
Jordan Nwora, a newer addition to the Raptors, acknowledged the prevalence of betting-related discussions among players and fans but refrained from commenting on Porter’s situation directly.
Porter, 24, has been averaging 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game this season. He is currently under a two-way contract with the G League’s Raptors 905 and had previous stints with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2020-21 season.
