Former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has emerged as Senate President of the 10th Assembly.
Akpabio, the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was paired with Senator Jibrin Barau, the senator representing Kano South who emerged as the Deputy Senate President.
After a short recess, the Clerk declared Akpabio as the Senate President having polled 63 votes while his rival, former governor of Zamfara, Abdulaziz Yari, garnered 46 votes.
The election began before 9 a.m. against the announced time of 10 a.m.
Ali Ndume, Senator-elect for Borno South, nominated Godswill Akpabio, senator-elect for Akwa Ibom North-East, as president of the Senate. Akpabio accepted the nomination. Elisha Abbo, senator-elect for Adamawa North, nominated Abdulaziz Yari, senator-elect for Zamfara West.
The senators later protested that Yari was not allowed to stand for the position as he is a first-time senator.
After the lawmakers voted in alphabetical order, two representatives of each team came to count their votes.
Senators Adeola Solomon and Ndume represented Senator Akpabio, while Senator Abbo and the senator-elect representing Ondo South Senatorial District, Jimoh Ibrahim, represented Senator Yari.
