Former President of Angola and leader of the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Jose Eduardo dos Santos, has died. He died at the age of 79 after a protracted battle with an undisclosed illness.
According to an official statement released by the government of Angola, dos Santos who was the President of Africa’s second-biggest oil producer for almost four decades died recently at the Barcelona Teknon clinic where he had been receiving treatment since 2019.
Dos Santos who established himself as one of Africa’s longest-serving Presidents resigned in 2017 and fled the country after allegations of brutal suppression of opponents, state-sponsored eliminations and corruption charges were levelled against him and members of his family.

Also, his regime was marked by a brutal civil war which lasted for around three decades against the United States-backed UNITA rebels that he won in 2002.
Furthermore, during Dos Santos’ regime, Angola experienced an oil boom that catapulted the country into one of the wealthiest in Africa by per capita income.
