Doubles specialist Gabriela Dabrowski achieved historic milestones in Canadian tennis during the 2023 season, securing her place in the country’s record books. Teaming up with Erin Routliffe, Dabrowski became part of the first Canadian duo to win a Grand Slam women’s doubles title at the U.S. Open last summer. This landmark victory was followed by Dabrowski’s crucial role in helping Canada win the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time.
Reflecting on the historic achievements, Dabrowski expressed her joy, stating, “It was so special, honestly. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.” The Billie Jean King Cup victory saw Canada sweep its way through the weekend playoffs, ultimately defeating Italy 2-0 in the final. Leylah Fernandez played a pivotal role, winning all five of her matches, supported by the relative newcomer Marina Stakusic, who delivered three upset victories. Dabrowski teamed up with Fernandez in a deciding semifinal match that propelled Canada past Czechia.
The victory in the Billie Jean King Cup marked a significant milestone for Canadian women’s tennis, with Dabrowski acknowledging the team’s ability to carry momentum quickly and perform well under pressure.
On the men’s side, Canada was unable to replicate its Davis Cup title from 2022, crashing out in the first round to Finland despite earning an automatic berth in the Final 8 as defending champion.
In the individual singles events, Canadian players experienced mixed results. Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime each secured titles late in the season, while Denis Shapovalov and Bianca Andreescu faced challenges due to injuries. Shapovalov, dealing with a knee issue, is on the entry list for the Australian Open, but Andreescu has opted to skip the tournament due to a lingering back problem.
In wheelchair tennis, Rob Shaw, ranked ninth globally, won silver in the men’s quad category at the Parapan Am Games.
Dabrowski, currently ranked eighth in the world, returned to top form after overcoming early-season challenges. Her successful partnership with Routliffe, marked by a Grand Slam victory and plans for a full season together in 2024, adds a promising chapter to Canadian tennis history.
Off the court, Tennis Canada Chief Executive Officer Michael Downey is set to retire at the end of the year, with Gavin Ziv, the organization’s senior vice-president and chief tournaments officer, taking over the position.
