According to military sources, the military junta that overthrew the government in Burkina Faso recently has adopted a “fundamental act” and named its leader as the country’s new President until a transitional charter is established.

A member of the junta, that calls itself the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (MPSR), disclosed on national TV that in line with the provisions of the act, a President, two Vice Presidents, and a Coordinator would be appointed, promising to ensure the continuity of the state and its affairs until transitional bodies can be constituted.

Under the act, the President will be Ltn. Col. Paul-Henri Damiba, who according to the putschists would serve as Head of State, Supreme Chief of the National Armed Forces, Guarantor of Judiciary and national independence.
Also, Damiba will guarantee Burkina Faso’s territorial integrity, the state’s continuity, and its compliance with international treaties. He will possess regulatory power and will assign ambassadors to foreign nations.
The movement revealed it had removed the current Chief of Staff and replaced him with his deputy.
