AIG: Request to extradite Diezani was turned down by UK

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Garba Baba Umar, who head Interpol’s National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja, has revealed that the United Kingdom Government turned down its request to extradite former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

While speaking on the sidelines of a recent investigative hearing by a House of Representative Adhoc committee investigating the alleged illegal sale of 48 million barrels of crude oil, Umar disclosed that mutual legal assistance (MLA) processes were followed in an effort to bring Diezani back but the UK government refused.

The AIG added that his effort led to the arrest and repatriation of the former head of pension funds, Abdulrasheed Maina, and the former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke (SAN).

He said: “We repatriated many Nigerians who were alleged to have swindled the Nigerian government. I went personally and brought Maina from Niger.

“I brought the former Attorney-General from Dubai and many other Nigerians who absconded.

“We brought them back to face justice and those who are in Nigeria hiding we took them back to their various countries to face justice.

“The issue of Diezani, a warrant of arrest is issued. I am sorry to say the government of the UK turned down our request.

“We followed mutual legal assistance to bring her back home. She went to court because according to them they have a system where they check out. Let me not go there.”
