The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, has said that all four border crossings to the United States near Niagara Falls have been closed after a vehicle explosion near a checkpoint by the Rainbow Bridge.
While talking to the Canadian Parliament recently, Trudeau said: “This is obviously a very serious situation in Niagara Falls. Additional measures are being contemplated at border crossings across the country.”
According to CNN, a car trying to enter the United States from Canada was directed to a second screening and there was an acceleration, followed by an explosion. The two people in the car died in the explosion, CNN said, citing law enforcement officials carrying out the investigation, without identifying them.
The FBI said it was investigating the incident, in collaboration with local, state and federal law enforcement partners.
FBI’s unit in Buffalo tweeted: “As the situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time.”
In a post on X, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she was “closely monitoring the situation,” without giving more details. She traveled to the area to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders.
The Buffalo-Niagara International Airport disclosed it’s fully operational, but it commenced security checks on all cars and passengers should expect additional screenings.
The incident happened on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S. and in one of the busiest travel weeks in the country.
