In a dramatic turn of events, Zambia’s former First Lady, Esther Lungu, has been released from police custody following a brief detention that sparked speculation and public interest.
Esther, former Zambia President Edgar Lungu, had been taken into custody along four others for questioning by law enforcement officials in relation to an ongoing corruption investigation.
According to her lawyer, Makebi Zulu, the charges against Lungu are “quite preposterous,”.
Zulu while confirming the release of Esther, noted that his client was safe and will be out of detention until she appears in court following investigations.
Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Danny Mwale noted that Esther who was arrested along with four others was released alongside her fellow accused.
In a statement, Mwale said “All the five suspects were released on police bond pending court appearance”.
Explaining the arrest, Zambian police said that they had arrested Esther Lungu and four other people over motor vehicle theft and taken into custody on Wednesday.
Zambia Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale said in a statement. The former first lady was also charged with the possession of property believed to be from the proceeds of crime.
Recall that in May, police questioned Lungu over her possession of three motor vehicles. A month later, police arrested her son Daliso and his wife. They were charged with money laundering and the possession of property suspected to be the proceeds of crime.
It could be recalled that Edgar Lungu lost to Hakainde Hichilema in Zambia’s 2021 presidential elections.
Her release has raised questions among the public and political circles about the transparency and impartiality of the investigation. Critics argue that the government’s actions may be politically motivated, especially given her husband’s prominent role in opposition politics since leaving office.
As this story unfolds, many Zambians are closely watching the developments, hoping for a fair and just resolution to the allegations against the former First Lady while maintaining the principles of transparency and accountability in their nation’s political arena.
