Bradley Alan Sturgeon, a 53-year-old resident of Nova Scotia, has been convicted of threatening and intimidating a justice system participant after he threatened to assault Judge Alain Begin of the Nova Scotia Provincial Court. The charges emanated from an incident on December 30, 2021 when Sturgeon was told that his driver’s license renewal was not approved due to a previous conviction for impaired driving.
An agreed statement of facts revealed that Sturgeon became agitated when he received the news and said: “I’m going to go down and beat the f**k out of Judge Begin.” Notably, it was Judge Begin that convicted Sturgeon for impaired driving in May 2022.
He made the threat at the Truro courthouse, though the judge was not on ground at the time. As a precautionary measure, a medium-risk safety protocol was instituted by sheriffs and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) assigned extra patrols around Judge Begin’s residence.

During his sentencing hearing, Sturgeon expressed remorse and said: “I really didn’t mean that I was to harm anybody. It was a really bad day, and I was really stressed out. I acted very inappropriately.” Sturgeon pleaded guilty and his need for a trial was spared.New Brunswick Provincial Court’s Judge Claude Hache presided over Sturgeon’s sentencing through a video link from his usual courtroom in Saint John.
Sturgeon was sentenced to two months of house arrest by Hache, followed by an additional two months with an overnight curfew. When he completes the conditional sentence order, he will be placed on probation for one year.
This is not the first time Judge Alain Begin has encountered a threat to his safety. He received warnings that he could be targeted by Gabriel Wortman, the gunman that killed 22 people in April 2020. The potential threat was connected to a previous professional association between Begin and Wortman’s uncle. Though precautionary measure was taken by Judge Begin during that weekend, no evidence suggested that he was specifically targeted.
