Protests have kicked off in Canada and the United States to demand the release of former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, who was apprehended by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan’s political party, shared videos of people trooping out in large numbers in Canada and the US, raising placards in support of Pakistan and demanding his release.
Also, the party claimed that Pakistani forces are attacking supporters of PTI and their families and has urged international human rights bodies to intervene. Due to the political unrest after Imran Khan’s arrest, Canada, the United States and United Kingdom have issued new travel advisories for their citizens.
PTI workers have taken to the streets in Pakistan, demanding Imran Khan’s release. The protests have degenerated into clashes with the police, making the US Embassy issue a travel alert for its citizens in Pakistan. The advisory urged citizens to be cautious and avoid locations with large crowds. Also, the embassy asked citizens to review their personal security plans, carry identification, and follow requests from law enforcement.

The Canadian government has urged its citizens and diplomatic staff to exercise a high degree of caution in Pakistan due to the erratic security situation.
Imran Khan’s arrest has garnered international attention, with United States and the United Kingdom officials calling for respect for democratic principles and the rule of law. His arrest and subsequent protests have led to political unrest in Pakistan which made several countries issue advisories.
