A bill that would permit the execution of condemned inmates by firing squad is on its way to the governor’s desk after it passed the Legislature recently with a veto-proof majority.
Firing squads will only be used if the state cannot get the drugs needed for lethal injections — though one death row inmate has already had his fixed execution postponed many times due to drug scarcity.
Previously, Idaho had a firing squad alternative on the books but has never used it. The option was removed from state law in 2009 after the Supreme Court of U.S. upheld a method of lethal injection that was used at the time.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, only Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah and South Carolina currently have laws allowing firing squads if other execution methods are unavailable.
