Google has confirmed that it is carrying out tests that will prevent some Canadian users from accessing news content as part of a potential response to Trudeau’s online news bill.
The “Online News Act,” or House of Commons bill C-18, was presented by Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government in April 2022 and it outlined rules that would require platforms like Google and Facebook to make commercial deals and pay news publishers for their content.
In an emailed statement, a spokesperson of Google said: “We’re briefly testing potential Bill C-18 product responses that will affect a very small percentage of Canadian users. Every year, we run thousands of tests to evaluate any potential changes to Search. “

Google confirmed that the time-limited tests, which affect a random sample of below 4% of Canadian users, “limit the visibility of Canadian and international news to varying degrees.”
