Tanitoluwa Adewumi, Nigerian athlete and chess prodigy, and his family members have been granted asylum in the United States of America.
The 12-year-old chess player came into limelight in 2019 when he won the New York state chess championship for his division. At that time, he was living with his family in a homeless shelter.
The Adewumis which comprise Tanitoluwa, his parents, and his older brother moved to New York after fleeing Nigeria in 2017 over fear of terror attacks from Boko Haram.

They sought religious asylum after they arrived in the United States. According to The Washington Post, the US has officially granted the family asylum.
While talking about the development, Kayode Adewumi, Tani’s father said: “We feel so relieved. Everybody is so happy.”
Tani’s chess career had been stagnant due of his pending asylum application, as he has been unable to travel to tournaments abroad, as such, his ability to reach his ultimate goal of becoming a Chess Grandmaster has been impeded.
