Missisauga residents call for fireworks ban in the city

Fireworks ban with fines recommended by Brampton City Council

After Caledon and Brampton banned fireworks, some residents in Mississauga want the city to be next in line.

Caledon banned fireworks in April, and Brampton did the same recently.

Some residents of the city seem to have had enough after witnessing the mess left behind after a fireworks brawl occurred in a Mississauga parking lot and hearing complaints of fireworks set off after midnight.

A petition put in place hopes to get 10,000 signatures to ban fireworks in Mississauga.

The petition from John Mallon read: “This past year was proof that people have taken advantage and have no regard for the by-laws around the use of fireworks.

“The current by-law states that you can only use fireworks on the 4 major holidays….but in Mississauga, we know that that’s simply not the case.”

According to Mallon, calling bylaw officers seems not to work as callers are redirected back to the police and police redirect people to the fire department.

He added: “So, the resident is left to deal with the noise, pollution, garbage, damage and the frustration with the running around trying to report the problem.”

Also, the petition points out safety concerns from a possible fire. People suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are traumatized and the noise can make pets panic.

The petition read: “Let’s follow in the steps of the City of Brampton, Massachusetts, Delaware, Ireland, India, Australia, Argentina, Chile and Colombia who have all banned the sale and use of fireworks. Let’s give our planet a chance, and let’s leave the fireworks to the trained pyro techno professionals.”

Mississauga councillors recently approved a fee increase of $1,000 for a fireworks vendor license in the city, from $233. But from the look of things, councillors are not ready to ban them.
