Canadian singer and songwriter, Allison Russell has won album of the year for her debut solo record “Outside Chil.”
Russell, whose classically beautiful album reflects the abuse she encountered as a child and her survival, revealed she heard the usual themes of community, family, unity and belonging in many of the speeches recently during the award show in Nashville, Tennessee.
She said: “I feel so honored to be part of this community, to be in a creative communion with my producer Dan Knoble.”
While thanking her friends, family and fellow nominees in a teary speech, she said after spending her early years in foster care, she found her family in music. “Music saved me, music saves me every day,” Russell said.
The award show which was hosted by the duo The Milk Carton Kids, and took place at the Ryman Auditorium celebrated the oft-misunderstood genre that mixes country, gospel, rock, folk, roots and blues. Apart from the winners, this year’s show gave lifetime achievement awards to Don Williams, singer-actor Chris Isaak and pioneering duo the Indigo Girls.
