3 surprising sources of cancer

(NC) We all know that there are some common things in our lives that can cause cancer, from tobacco smoke to the sun’s rays. But there are a number of other items that are carcinogenic – or cancer-causing – that you may not be aware of. Here are three to watch out for.

Sawdust
If you’re a hobbyist woodworker or work in a field like carpentry where you’re regularly exposed to sawdust, you should know that the fine particles can lead to nasal and lung cancers. When cutting wood, wear a mask and, whenever possible, use a dust-collection system.

Processed meats
Meats that have been preserved by smoking, salting or adding other preservatives contain cancer-causing chemicals. This includes things like deli meats, bacon, jerky and hot dogs. While you don’t necessarily need to cut them completely out of your diet, you should minimize the amount of processed meat you eat.

Radon
The ground beneath our feet contains varying levels of uranium. When it breaks down, it forms an invisible radioactive gas called radon. Outside, it mixes with fresh air and gets diluted. But inside your home, it can accumulate to dangerous levels. The only way to know if you are at risk is to test. You can buy a DIY radon test kit or hire a certified professional. If your radon level is high, it can be fixed in less than a day, reducing the level 80 to 90 per cent.

You can learn more about radon or purchase a test kit at takeactiononradon.ca.
