The President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci has resigned to face an allegation from a war crimes court in The Hague.
The leader of guerrilla when the country waged a war of independence against Serbia in the 90s announced his resignation during a news conference in the capital city of Pristina. He said he needed to take the step “to protect the integrity of the presidency of Kosovo”.
He said: “I will cooperate closely with justice. I believe in truth, reconciliation and the future of our country and society.”
A special Kosovo court based in Hague, Netherlands which was set up to try the crimes of former Albanian rebel leaders indicted Thaci.
Thaci who has been president since 2016, has maintained that he is innocent about the war that a lot of Kosovars consider a “just” struggle for their independence from the oppression of Serbia.
