Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team has achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the prestigious CONMEBOL Copa América for the first time. This significant accomplishment grants Canada entry as one of six Concacaf guest nations in the 16-team tournament, slated to take place from June 20 to July 14 in the United States.
Drawn into Group A, Canada will kick off their Copa América campaign against none other than the reigning FIFA World Cup champions, Argentina. The highly anticipated match is scheduled for June 20, at Atlanta’s venue. Subsequent group stage fixtures will see Canada facing off against Peru on Tuesday, June 25, in Kansas, followed by a clash against Chile on Saturday, June 29, in Orlando.
Joining the ranks of 10 CONMEBOL powerhouses, Canada will be among six Concacaf representatives competing in this year’s tournament. Alongside Canada, the Concacaf contingent includes Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, and the host nation, USA. Canada secured their spot in the CONMEBOL Copa América with a resounding 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, March 23, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Cyle Larin etched his name in the annals of Canadian soccer history by netting the match-winning goal in the 61st minute, followed by Jacob Shaffelburg’s late strike in the 91st minute to seal the victory.
