Former West Indies cricket star Marlon Samuels has been handed a six-year ban from all cricket activities for breaching the anti-corruption code, as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The charges stem from Samuels’ involvement in a T10 league in the United Arab Emirates in 2019, despite the player having retired from all forms of cricket.
An independent tribunal found the 42-year-old former top-order batsman guilty of four breaches of the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code. This marks Samuels’ second ban, with the first occurring in 2008. The ban is effective from November 11.
Although Samuels has retired, the ICC’s General Manager, Alex Marshall, emphasized that the ban serves as a deterrent for any participant considering violating anti-corruption rules. Marshall stated, “Though he is retired now, Mr. Samuels was a participant when the offenses were committed. The ban of six years will act as a strong deterrent to any participant who intends to break the rules.”
Samuels played a pivotal role in the West Indies’ victories in the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. Over his international career, which spanned close to two decades from 2000 to 2018, he participated in 71 Tests, 207 One-day Internationals, and 67 T20 matches for the West Indies.
Among the charges brought against Samuels was the failure to disclose the receipt of gifts, payments, hospitality, or other benefits that could tarnish the participant or the sport of cricket. The ban also cited his failure to disclose the receipt of hospitality with a value of $750 or more, along with non-cooperation with the investigation.
Marshall highlighted that Samuels had undergone numerous anti-corruption sessions during his cricket career and was well aware of his obligations under the anti-corruption codes. The ban, therefore, serves as a significant penalty for the former cricketer’s breaches of the sport’s integrity standards.
