Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow, demanded “immediate and unconditional return of all hostages and a ceasefire” in the Israel-Hamas war.
In her reaction on X (formerly known as Twitter), Chow commended Toronto’s diversity and the ability of Torontonians to “meet deep differences with compassion and hope.” She added that Toronto’s Muslim and Jewish communities are not feeling safe amid an “unnerving” rise in hate crimes.

Chow later talked to reporters in her city hall office and said she was not talking about whether a ceasefire should be conditional on a hostage release and stressed that she is not a Middle East expert and “there is so much complexity and history involved.”
She said: “I’m just watching the faces of all these innocent lives being lost, these children — I can’t imagine what their parents are going through.”
She however noted that “a yearning for peace” amid mourning for Israeli and Palestinian lives lost.
She revealed she hopes there will be no protests in Toronto as citizens pause for Remembrance Day ceremonies and stated further that the city of Toronto’s lawyer told her there is no legal way to restrict such gatherings.

Over 1,400 people have been killed in Israel since the commencement of the war, most in the Hamas attack, and 240 people including Canadians have been taken hostage.
