In a significant collaborative effort, the City of Brampton and the federal government have unveiled plans to accelerate the development of over 3,150 residential units within the next three years, with a long-term goal of creating more than 24,000 homes over the next decade. This strategic partnership leverages the Housing Accelerator Fund, in which the federal government commits $114 million to support Brampton’s ambitious housing initiative, as per a press release from the City.
This innovative partnership is designed to combat the rising issue of housing affordability and address the surging demand for housing within Brampton. As the city experiences rapid population growth, it previously introduced its ‘Municipal Housing Pledge,’ which seeks to construct 113,000 new homes by 2031. Brampton’s officials have made it clear that they remain dedicated to advocating for funding, including support from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, to reach this target.
The aim is to ensure that not only housing but also essential soft infrastructure, such as healthcare, transit and transportation, education, and social services, is readily available to cater to the community’s needs.
Expressing his gratitude for the continued partnership and investment from the Government of Canada, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown stated, “We are thankful for the Government of Canada’s continued partnership and investment in our community.” He also highlighted the city’s commitment to reducing obstacles to affordable housing development, thus spurring the introduction of new incentive programs for affordable housing in key areas of the city.
“We’re taking bold steps to build more homes faster for the people of Brampton by collaborating with the City to overcome barriers to affordable housing construction,” emphasized Sean Fraser, the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities. This collaborative effort marks a significant stride in addressing the ongoing housing crisis and stands as an exemplary model for Canadian cities willing to cooperate with federal initiatives to alleviate this critical issue.
