Joe Biden signs gay marriage bill into law

United States special operations forces have carried out an evacuation of the American embassy in war-torn Sudan.

The forces combed Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, with helicopters on the ground for not more than one hour. No shots were fired and no major casualties were recorded during the evacuation process.

After the evacuation, United States shut down the U.S. mission in Khartoum indefinitely. Thousands of Americans remaining in Sudan are left behind with officials saying it would be too dangerous to carry out a broader evacuation mission.

While thanking the troops in a statement, President Joe Biden said he was receiving regular updates from his team on efforts to help those remaining Americans in Sudan “to the extent possible.”

Also, he called for the end of “unconscionable” violence in the country as two rival commanders fought for power in the African country.

The mission was carried out by about 100 U.S. soldiers in three MH-47 helicopters as fight between two armed Sudanese commanders entered its second week and claimed over 400 lives.

The American embassy staff were taken from a landing zone at the embassy to an undisclosed place in Ethiopia.

Biden said: “I am proud of the extraordinary commitment of our Embassy staff, who performed their duties with courage and professionalism and embodied America’s friendship and connection with the people of Sudan.

”I am grateful for the unmatched skill of our service members who successfully brought them to safety.

”This tragic violence in Sudan has already cost the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians. It’s unconscionable and it must stop.

”The belligerent parties must implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, allow unhindered humanitarian access, and respect the will of the people of Sudan.”
