All the charges brought against Mason Greenwood has been dropped following the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of material evidence.
Greater Manchester Police stated that the decision has “not been taken lightly” and it was “only fair” to publicise the latest development given the “significant media coverage of this case”.
The Manchester United striker was due to stand trial this year.
The 21-year-old striker faced one count of attempted rape, one count of controlling and coercive behaviour, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
All three charges are connected to the same woman.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had a “duty to stop the case” following the “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light”.
Those developments meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”, it added.
“In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case. We have explained our decision to all parties.”
GMP’s head of public protection and Chief Superintendent, Michaela Kerr, said it was “only fair” that the force publicised the latest development given the “significant media coverage of this case”.
She added: “The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly.
“Despite the media and public’s interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.”
The CS appealed to people who felt they were victims, insisting that GMP is “committed to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls”.
She continued: “An ever-increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training and the force is more consistently utilising tools, available via the criminal justice system, to keep people safe and care for victims.
“If you feel you are or might be a victim, please don’t let this case put you off asking for help.”
Greenwood, who has made one appearance for England, was suspended from playing or training with Manchester United.
Since the charges against Greenwood, Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with him.

Seeing this has been a great help to me and some of the things I’m going to have to face in my life I’m the near future as I’ve been sexually abused, molested and raped by a lot of men as a young child and the truth has to come out. I am in the process of getting some serious mental health help as what’s happened to me is extremely traumatizing and it’s going to cause a lot of anger, both Good and Bad.
Some if the people who did some of these things to me were not trying to hurt me so I will do my best to keep their names out of the paper and the public view as they don’t necessarily deserve to suffer for what the Government and The Children’s Aid Society has been doing to us all for who knows how long but they are actually creating rapists and things like that because a lot of those who did things to me had things done to them too, as little children and it’s really not their fault.
This article gives me some real hope for the future and strength to fight this battle which is my life even more because I know what I have to do as God told me a long time ago but the damage was so deep that I had to forget about him and forget my life so I would live long enough to finally be heard and taken seriously and now Canada I believe has abolished the statue of limitations on Sexually based offenses as like I said I was a little girl when all of these things were done to me so I would have never been able to get Justice.
I am so grateful for having seen this as I’ve been ignoring reading all of these articles I’m being sent because I’m very sick and the hospitals are trying to kill me by not giving me the medical care I am entitled to as a Canadian Citizen born in Toronto Canada as our Government are a bunch of greedy pigs bringing too many people to this country for money and not for sanctuary like it’s supposed to be.
Maybe with this comment someone can help me get the media attention I need to help make some changes that are desperately needed before Canada goes to War against the immigrants because our Government is forcing us to become racist when we are not because they would rather take better care of people who are not Canadians, giving them our Healthcare and pensions and everything and taking away our History and eventually there won’t be a Canada because the rich riches like Roger’s wanna name everything after themselves when they should leave our History alone because The Skydome is a Historical Site but couldn’t be protected because the amount if years needs to be lowered so things like this can’t happen. Ted Roger’s went and named The Skydome The Roger’s Center when that’s not it’s name and should change it back like he was going to do some years back now. Hopefully what I’m about to do will convince him that what he did is wrong and this is his chance to make it right before I put him on my list of people to take down for using money to do bad things.
