Hospitals in Ontario are looking for more help from the province to address the waitlist, speed up surgeries and increase emergency departments.

Around 12,000 children are on a waitlist for surgeries across the province. According to officials at four major pediatric hospitals, it is part of a much bigger problem.

Half of the 11,789 children on the list are waiting beyond the clinically recommended wait times, which hospitals reveal is partially due to the respiratory surge and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bruce Squires, the President of McMaster Children’s Hospital said: “The fact that we’ve now come out of the surge and we’re still very strained helps to demonstrate that we really need major investments.”
