The government of Vietnam has disclosed that President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has resigned after the Communist Party of the country accused him of being responsible for “violations and malfeasance” by officials under his watch.
The highest-ranking official the party’s extensive anti-corruption campaign targeted is Phuc, a former prime minister credited with accelerating pro-business reforms. Since 2021, Phuc has held the largely ceremonial office of president.
There is no highest leader in the country; instead, the country is governed by four “pillars”: the party secretary, the president, the prime minister, and the speaker of the parliament.
According to the government, 68-year-old Phuc was responsible for offences committed by many officials, including two deputy prime ministers and three ministers.
In a statement, the government said: “Fully being aware of his responsibilities before the party and people, he submitted an application to resign from his assigned positions, quit his job and retire.”
After the removal of two of his deputy prime ministers recently, there had been widespread rumours that he would be replaced as the party intensifies its “blazing furnace” anti-corruption program under the instruction of its influential and long-serving leader, Nguyen Phu Trong.
