(NC) Radon is a radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell or taste – but if there are high concentrations of it in your home, it could be a risk to your health. So it’s important that you know and take steps to reduce it.
Radon is naturally occurring, and it can seep into your home from the surrounding soil and become trapped in various areas, such as basements or crawl spaces. The good news is that testing your home’s radon levels and mitigating high amounts can be relatively simple. Here are three easy steps to make sure your home is radon-safe:
1. Get a certified test
You can hire a certified professional to do the test for you, or you could purchase a test kit through your local hardware store. If you take the do-it-yourself approach, make sure to use a test that’s certified through the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program.
2. Test for at least three months
Radon testing isn’t a one-and-done process. Levels in your home can vary according to time of year and are only considered dangerous over certain levels. Health Canada recommends that homeowners test their home’s radon levels during fall or winter months.
3. Reduce your home’s radon levels if needed
If your test results are higher than Health Canada’s guideline of 200 becquerels per cubic metre, you should take action to reduce it as soon as possible. Fortunately, radon mitigation services are easy to find and relatively inexpensive.
