British politician Rishi Sunak has become the UK Prime Minister after co-contestant, Penny Mordaunt, failed to secure the needed 100 nominations from her fellow MPs.
Sunak won the support of the overwhelming majority of Tory MPs, which enabled him to claim the keys to No10.
As a result of this development, Sunak will be Britain’s first PM of Indian heritage.
Mordaunt pulled out of the contest at the eleventh hour after she failed to get the support of 100 colleagues.
The ex-Chancellor took an early lead in the Tory leadership race, after losing the last one to Liz Truss some weeks ago.
Some hours after Truss announced her resignation recently, MPs came out in droves to support Mr Sunak.
However, his chances of moving to Downing Street were reduced when Boris Johnson informally started a spectacular comeback bid.
Johnson cut short his holiday in the Dominican Republic to travel back to London and beef up support.
The heavyweights of Tory were split between two camps, with James Cleverly and Priti Patel supporting Boris while Grant Shapps and Kemi Badenoch declared support for Rishi.
Mordaunt trailed behind the pair, with just about two dozen MPs backing her campaign over the weekend.
Johnson later pulled out of the race and insisted he had the numbers to go to a vote of the Conservative membership.
However, Johnson threw in the towel as MPs broke for Sunak at a rate of over two to one.
