Today, September 13, 2021 makes it 100 days since the federal government of Nigeria suspended the use of Twitter in the country. However, the suspension has so far cost the Nigerian economy about N247.61 billion.
The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) suspended Twitter on June 5, few days after it removed a post made by President Muhammadu Buhari, which was reported and considered to be highly offensive to the Igbo tribe.
According to NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown, the Nigerian economy has lost N103.17 million ($250,600) every hour since the ban was effected.
It has now been 2,400 hours since the Federal Government of Nigeria banned Twitter which puts the total amount lost at N247.8billion ($601,439,044) at the rate of N412/$.
To bypass the ban, the use of Virtual Private Networks has increased with a lot of Nigerians almost forgetting that a ban is in place.
A firm, ExpressVPN had revealed that it recorded an increase of over 200 percent in web traffic from Nigeria since Twitter was banned by the Federal Government.
